A wiki is a cool, open platform that you and your students can use for all kinds of awesomely creative stuff. As of this writing, wikispaces is giving wikispaces away for free to educators. To get your own, follow this link: http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers
Sign up for a free educator's site. As long your students have an email address you can invite them into the wiki. It is also possible to set permissions and things under the 'Manage Space' tab on the left side of the page. A key feature to know about is that as a site organizer, you can set it so that your space is private so that only members are allowed to view your page.
To set this feature in your own page, click on the 'Manage Space' link. Under 'Space Settings', click on Members and Permissions. Under space permissions, select the radio button next to 'Private'. This will take your space out of the public domain, in case you don't want everybody and anybody to be able to see what your students are doing.
Have fun with your wiki, once you become familiar with using it, the classroom possibilities are endless.
